Design Resumes: A Thing of the Past?
Valerie Atkisson / ArtBistro
An interesting thing happened. I asked our contributing writers if they would be willing to post their resumes as sample resumes for the benefit of our users. The Graphic Designer and two Illustrators said that they didn’t have one, but that on their web site, they had professional information. These are experienced and busy artists who get a lot of work and they no longer keep a resume. But they update their professional information on their websites. This is not because they are lazy, but that they don’t need that formal piece of paper to get business. It is easier for people to find their experience on their sites. I find this very interesting. As a fine artist, you definitely still need a resume. If you want to show your work, you need it for the gallery show. If you want to apply for a grant, it is a must. Do photographers need one? I wonder if they are following this trend. Will this trend continue to grow?

Obviously anyone who is in a hiring position is interested in seeing your work. BUT I think having a well designed resume is very important. Just because it is a text document does not mean it can't look good, and it tells and employer a lot about your experience.

I'm with JasonD. I think my resume sucks. Plus its ugly. B/w, no elements that refer back to my design style. I'm working on it now, and a business card for myself. After I hook myself up with that, I'm redesigning my resume and cover letter to all match. I'm pretty excited. Thanks for the article, its good to know other people are questioning what is happening.

I agree Resumesare no longer a "formal" way of showing what you can do with graphic designers most people who hire want a sample of what you have done for other people. Its all about oh you did that for them you can do that for me.

I'm with Angie. I've been trying to determine if my resume is my "weakest link" for awhile now.
