About Me:: Juan La Torre won his first award in 1979 in a High School Drawing Contest, one of the things that encouraged him to keep building a career of art for his life. In 1981 he was First Place Award Winner in a City Drawing Contest. A few later he started a period of four years experimenting artistically with many different media. In 1985 Juan took classes of Technical Drafting and English, and his cartoon 'Max' was chosen to be published in a newspaper, in Lima, Peru's capital city; two years later he returned to Guadalupe where he was born. During this period of his life he created arts and crafts including some sculptures, that today are around the world. In 1989 painted with oils for the first time. The results weren't satisfactory for him though. The next year because of his well known talent in the community, he was invited to act as a Juror in various art contests. In 1992 Juan sponsored neighborhood kids in sports and became more involve in his community affairs, becaming after two years the President of Grupo Juvenil de Apoyo, an institution to help poor people. In 1994 the City Hall awarded him Most Outstanding Artist in both Painting and Sculpture. One year later people voted him, and he became a City Council Member. In midd 1997 before the ending period in official politic affairs, with a Special License Juan leaved the City Hall and changed his residence in Peru' for one in U.S.A. 1998 opened a new door for Juan, when he got a contract with MetroParks Tacoma with the Art Center At Manitou, as an Art Instructor. Later he will exhibit Acrylic Paintings, Ceramics, Oils and in 2002 started formal studies at the Tacoma Community College, pursuing an Art and Sience Degree. That Spring among other students he presented some of his Bronze Sculptures at the College's Art Gallery . During that year Juan was invited by the White Dove Art Gallery to ehhibit Peruvian Ceramics and MetroParks-Tacoma sponsored him and other local artists at an exhibition at the Karpeles Manuscript Museum. In 2003 started exhibitions of Peruvian Masks and Sculptures at the Two Vaults Art Gallery. The same year he got awarded Third Place at the Proctor District Art Festival and was an Honorable Mention Winner at the Puyallup Fair Fine Arts Show in between a Hundred of fine artists. In 2004Juan was awarded Second Place at the Proctor District Arts Festival and Third Place at the Puyallup Fair Fine Arts Show. In 2005 among other latino artists exhibited for the 'America, the Colors of the Continent' at the Tacoma Community College Art Gallery. Again in 2006 Juan was awarded with Honorable Mention at the Puyallup Fair Fine Arts Show......
