Is there any big photographers  that didn't go to school? I just want to know if you have to have a lot of school for this.

You’re a very inquisitive person... from wanting to know the price of gas to the cost of homes. I remember when you started a thread a while ago about this being your business and then asked the question what camera should you get... then shortly afterwards... you wanted to know the best school to go to for photography... ahh... the memories of the past year

I think I'm getting a little misty eyed with Bistro's first birthday and all

I see skies of blue, clouds of white.
Bright blessed days, dark sacred nights.
And I think to myself:
"Damn I hope a plane spots my raft soon."

I didn't go to school for it. Well I took a few photography classes in school- I started out back in 2000 taking a black and white non-digital photography class where we learned all sorts of things, even how to use the darkroom and develop film. Then I took a digital photography course that was a tad helpful but mostly just took it to get some college credit I needed as there wasn't a lot I really learned in it- was a very easy class. Just about everything I learned was self taught by online tutorials- when it comes to Photoshop- and through a lot of reading of books and just getting out there and shooting. You absolutely must know the basics so if you don't I would definitely suggest some sort of class that will teach you all about F stops, aperature, ISO, white balance, etc. After that I say PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE.

Sorry to be the droll academician that I often am in these forums.  I guess you can't take the teacher out of the classroom.  Your question I think would be fairly difficult to answer accurately as that is not the kind of data that I think would be compiled for historical purposes (speaking as an art historian).  But I will offer an educated guess based upon what I do know.  I would guess that photography as university/college curriculum is a fairly recent phenomenon probably dating back to the mid 20th century.  I say this for three reasons.  One, the old tired debate of is photography art was still very much alive and argued about even by this point in history.  However, it is also during this period that more progreesive schools were opening up their curriculums to "new" genres of "art."  I speak of film, performance, conceptual art, etc.  Photography probably rode on the coattails of this new more open POV.  Thirdly, photography once it was established as a subject in college/university in a lot of cases was not taught through the art departments but rather as a part of a journalism or communications program. It is is at some schools.  But again even these types of programs were fairly new in the university setting.  Photography, like art (painting, sculpture, etc) was taught in the master/apprentice approach from its early days and into the 20th century.  So, my guess as to a list would probably include most photographers whose mature works predate the mid-20th century.  Such people as Ansel Adams, Edward Weston, Margaret Bourke-White, Weegee, etc would fit into this catagory.  As a side note, I only ever had one photography class in my entire school history.  I was working on my BFA degree and took a photography class out of the journalism department.  However, I already knew most of what I was being taught but I had to take it as a formality to complete my coursework.  At the same time I was taking photography, I also ran the darkroom for the journalism department helping many poor hapless students learn the art of the darkroom and making sure they completed their assignments without having a nervous breakdown.

If you are in fact referring to me which it sounds like you are.  First of all I have a PhD in art history with an emphasis on modern and contemporary European and American art.  I am quite well-schooled in the history of photography.  I have also taught at several fine art departments and know many people who also do so.  I am also well-versed in the historical development of curriculum programs (including photography) in fine art departments.  I am not trying to be a smart-ass or a conceited pompous know-it-all.  I am just trying to share knowledge as was asked for.  I had one photography class in college and am otherwise self-taught.  You are putting words into my mouth.  A good photographer is a good photographer whether s/he has had formal training or not.  I never said otherwise.  Finally what does owning a photography studio or gallery have to do with anything?  But as long as you bring it up, I gave teaching long ago, worked for stock phoography agencies as an editor and do in fact currently make my bread and butter as a professional photographer who runs his own business.  I, however, do not own a gallery.  Maybe you should read what I wrote a little more carefully.
