Obama to tap his network to help storm victims

"I think we can get tons of volunteers to travel down there, if it becomes necessary," Obama told reporters after attending St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Lima, Ohio.

"I think we can activate an e-mail list of a couple of million people who want to give back," he said. Donations could include cash, goods and individual labor, he said.

Obama said he first would ask officials in the affected areas what is most needed, which may not be known for a few days.

Obama also said he might visit storm-damaged areas once "things have settled down."

"The thing that I am always concerned about in the middle of a storm is whether we are drawing resources away from folks on the ground," he said, referring to the security demands his traveling entourage makes on local police and other officials.

Obama said he saw no problem with Republican rival John McCain's trip Sunday to Mississippi. "I'm assuming that where he went, that wasn't an issue," Obama said.

Obama later conducted phone interviews with several Gulf Coast radio and TV stations, urging listeners to follow local officials' instructions about evacuations, his campaign said.

Later, at an economic forum in Toledo, Obama appeared to have only one problem with Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the Republican candidate for vice president: She holds the same positions as John McCain, the GOP presidential candidate who tapped her.

That may seem like a "well, duh" observation on his part, but Obama has tiptoed carefully around Palin as he tries to attract female voters. So far he has criticized her only for her ties to McCain.

On Sunday, the Democratic nominee seemed eager to blunt Palin's possible appeal to undecided women, but again, indirectly.

"We're going to make sure that equal pay for equal work is a reality in this country," Obama said. Alluding to Palin without saying her name, he said that she "seems like a very engaging person, nice person. But I've got to say, she's opposed, like John McCain is, to equal pay for equal work. That doesn't make much sense to me."

Why is it, exactly, that some people in Louisiana can expect to be without electricity for more than a month? I thought the Republicans were all over it this time; John McCain had his photoop packing a cooler...The national guard was all present and ready...Storm, came, went, and evidently, so did all the promises to AGAIN support and help the people of New Orleans and Baton Rouge.

I personally like McCains' photo-op from Katrina... "Let them eat cake"
